Math Superstars

The Math Superstars Program is an extracurricular math enrichment provided by the PTA . From September to April of the school year, students receive 25 weekly word problem worksheets in grades 1 to 5. Kindergarten begins in January and runs for 10 weeks. See the schedule below.

Designed to stretch the boundaries of student knowledge, the worksheets should reflect the child's own thinking. Stars are awarded based upon the difficulty of reaching the correct answer, and encouragement is given for all effort. PTA classroom volunteers build interest and reward achievement by giving treats (provided by generous local businesses and the volunteer) when milestones are reached in the program. In April, children earning enough stars are asked to take a test to determine one student from each grade (except KG) that will represent our school at the district level.

At Jacksonville Beach Elementary, most teachers use Math Superstars as required homework in their classes. Some choose to consider the program a voluntary opportunity for students. Either way, it's challenging and fun to keep building the mathematical skills so necessary to success.
